Edwards undergoes successful surgery on broken left collarbone

Colin Edwards underwent successful surgery on his broken left collarbone in Barcelona's Insitituto Universitario DEXEUS hospital on Monday afternoon following his crash in qualifying for the Portuguese Grand Prix

The American had a plate and screws fitted by regular MotoGP surgeon Dr Javier Mir, who also operated on Edwards when he broke his other collarbone in a crash at Catalunya last June.

"Doctor Mir and his team have done a great job," said Edwards. "They were the ones that took care of me the last time. The surgery was really quick. I'm feeling great, still a little dizzy from the anaesthesia but feeling all right. They put a block on the side of my neck so it's feeling a little numb.

"I'm here watching TV and tweeting. Just want to let everyone know I'm OK!"

Edwards' collarbone was broken in multiple places in the crash, which happened when Randy de Puniet fell while passing him and slid into the American's Suter-BMW at speed.

"The bone was broken in five pieces and required the insertion of a titanium plate with 10 screws," Dr Mir explained. "The surgery performed was successful and he will be able to begin rehabilitation/physical therapy within a week."

The next round of the 2012 MotoGP season takes place at Le Mans on 20 May.
