Greg Biffle hopes to be a NASCAR Sprint Cup title factor after ending winless streak

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader Greg Biffle hopes ending a 49-race winless streak at Texas last week will be the springboard he needs to be a title contender in 2012

The Roush Fenway racer has enjoyed a great start to his campaign, already claiming five top-10 finishes from the first seven races of the season, with 13th places at Bristol and Martinsville being his worst results thus far.

Biffle had been winless since claiming victory at Kansas Speedway back in 2010 but defeated five-time champion Jimmie Johnson last week at Texas Motor Speedway, after the Hendrick driver had dominated.

Now in his 11th Cup season, Biffle admitted to feeling an "urgency" to challenge for a title in NASCAR's top championship. Second place behind Tony Stewart in 2005 is Biffle's best result to date.

He feels confident about his Roush Fenway team's strength this year, with team-mates Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards currently second and 11th respectively in the drivers' standings.

"I feel an urgency because I'm ready to win it," said Biffle. "I feel great. I feel better than I ever have in these past five seasons with the way our team is and how competitive we are, and how I'm driving the car and how I feel personally.

"I think anybody feels the urgency to want to win it and, obviously, some day I'm not going to be doing this anymore."

Biffle's team-mate Edwards, the 2011 Cup championship runner up, praised his Roush Fenway colleague for his role in helping raise the team up to its current level of performance.

"Right now, Greg is the number one team [at Roush] because they're leading the points and winning races," said Edwards.

He added: "I feel that Greg and [crew chief] Matt [Puccia] have had a huge part in building this team, so that guys like myself are able to come in and have success. Greg has my respect. His team has my respect, just like everybody in the garage right now."

Biffle could become the first driver in NASCAR history to win titles in the three national touring series if he can add a Cup crown to his 2000 Truck and '02 Busch (now Nationwide) Series championship wins.
