Q & A with Alexander Sims

Alexander Sims has joined the Status GP team to complete in the European Le Mans Series this season

He talked to AUTOSPORT following his first taste of LMP machinery.

Q. What did you make of your first experience of an LMP car?

Alexander Sims: It was cool and about what I expected. It had good power and good downforce.

Q. How well prepared do you feel for the season opener at Paul Ricard this weekend?

AS: I did eight to 10 laps, so it is not the ideal scenario, but it is not a disaster either. I'm feeling pretty comfortable going into the race weekend.

Q. How did the deal with Status happen?

AS: I'd kept in contact with the team after last year finish out of curiosity and as the season approached they put an offer to me. I had to okay it with McLaren, because that deal is my priority, and they were happy for me to do it. It will be good to get some endurance racing experience in a prototype, which means I will be on the ball when I get to race the McLaren for the first time.

Q. You are listed against the Status Lola on the Le Mans 24 Hours entry list; what are the plans there?

AS: It was done more out of convenience than anything else because of time constraints. Status is still on the reserve list, so I'm playing it by ear. It is certainly a race I want to do.

Q. How much running have you done in the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 since you were announced as part of that programme?

AS: I've got quite a lot of time in the car and feel comfortable in it now. I've tested at Hockenheim and Paul Ricard, and done a few days at the MIRA proving ground.

Q. Will you race a McLaren this year?

AS: Nothing is confirmed yet. There are seats in McLarens yet to filled, so there is still a chance of a full season, but I definitely hope to get a seat for the Spa 24 Hours.
