Davide Valsecchi admits he 'threw away' victory chance in GP2 season opener

Davide Valsecchi claims that he did not deserve to win the opening GP2 race of the season after making a bad start from pole position

The DAMS driver recovered from a sluggish getaway to take second place behind race winner Luiz Razia, who charged away at the front unchallenged after capitalising on Valsecchi's error.

"The team and my car deserved the win so it's a shame that I lost it," said Valsecchi. "I had a really bad start and I did not deserve to win today.

"Maybe for tomorrow we need to do things differently because I almost threw away everything. We were competitive in free practice and fantastic in qualifying, and then you almost throw everything away at the start. It's a shame.

"But that's racing. I almost stalled, so in the end I was lucky to start at all. We were really competitive and I am happy about that, but Razia deserves the win because he made no mistakes today."

The Italian added that there was still plenty to be pleased about from the season-opening weekend so far.

"For the team I made the pole position and the fastest lap [which earns bonus points] so I need to be happy," he said.

"We lost everything at the start, but our car was strong and we came back immediately."
