Jamie Whincup secures V8 Supercars pole for race two in Adelaide

Jamie Whincup followed up his last-gasp win in the V8 Supercars season-opener in Adelaide on Saturday with pole position for the second race of the weekend

A 1m20.5353s for the reigning champion in the closing seconds of the session saw his Triple Eight Holden edge out Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander by a tenth of a second.

Ford Performance Racing driver Mark Winterbottom took third place, while his team-mate Will Davison held provisional pole going into the final minutes but was pushed right back to sixth amid a flurry of last-gasp quick times.

Race one polesitter Craig Lowndes was fourth in the second Triple Eight car. Lowndes' day started badly when he had 25 points deducted from his championship score for clashing with Todd Kelly in race one. Kelly's brother Rick qualified his Holden between Lowndes and Davison in fifth.

Lee Holdsworth will start seventh for his second race with Stone Brothers Ford, followed by his team-mates Tim Slade and Shane van Gisbergen, with Michael Caruso completing the top 10 in his Garry Rogers Holden.

There was more misery for James Courtney. HRT successfully got his car back in shape after his race one crash, but it ground to a halt with a loss of drive before he could set a time.

That caused one of two red flags, the other being the result of a violent collision between Greg Murphy (Kelly Holden) and Jonathon Webb (Tekno Holden) that will give their teams plenty of work to do in the three hours between qualifying and the race.

Of the other drivers involved in race one's big accidents, Jason Bright fared best as he put his repaired Brad Jones Holden on the inside of row eight.
