Van der Garde stunned by his own bad luck

Giedo van der Garde has expressed his disbelief at the misfortune he suffered during GP2 qualifying at Monza on Friday

The Dutchman, who leads the fight for second in the championship coming into this weekend, qualified a lowly 20th on the grid after a session marred by traffic and yellow flags.

"Its unbelievable, I've never had a session like this before," van der Garde told AUTOSPORT. "Okay, sometimes you get some traffic, or you have yellow flags, but I didn't get one clear lap."

Van der Garde explained that he was happy with the pace of his car, which was underlined by his Addax team-mate Charles Pic taking pole position.

"I had a very good car, and the pace was there," he said. "In the first sector I was as fast as Charles, and I could go a little bit quicker in the second sector. I can't tell you about the third because I never had a clear run through there. But I'm certain we would have been top five."

While van der Garde was fortunate that his closest rival, Jules Bianchi, also had a troubled session and will share the 10th row of the grid with him. But Pic is now only five points behind after picking up the two bonus points for pole.

"All I can do now is try to get into the points in race one to have a good position for the reversed grid race on Sunday," van der Garde added. "That is our only hope now to save the weekend."
