Richards happy with Aston LMP1 debut

Aston Martin Racing boss David Richards says he is pleased with the team's debut in the LMP1 class of Le Mans this year, despite its lead car looking like it is just out of reach of a place on the podium

The #007 car is currently running in fourth place, with Stefan Mucke at the wheel, two laps behind the #1 Audi R15 of Rinaldo Capello. The #008 is running 13th after losing an hour to a gearbox problem this morning, while the #009 car crashed out shortly afterwards with Harold Primat at the wheel.

Richards declared himself happy with running fourth as the highest non-diesel team.

"We have to be very pleased," Richards told AUTOSPORT. "I look around the place here at some extraordinarily tired people, and the effort they've put in not just over the last 24 hours but over the last weeks to get the three cars to where they are. It's an extraordinary David and Goliath effort.

"The problem is when you have a performance disadvantage you tend to push things too hard, when you have a performance advantage you make things look easy. Like the Peugeots are doing now, they've clearly got that advantage that they can make it look easy to the rest of us.

"There's nothing we can do about it really, we'll just set our times and cruise around now. Stefan has got into the car with the target of 3m36s laptimes."
