Camara unhurt in heavy accident
Rookie Jaime Camara has escaped injury in a heavy accident at the Indianapolis 500
The Conquest Racing driver made hard contact with the Turn 2 wall on lap 82, becoming the third driver to crash out after Graham Rahal and Marty Roth.
Camara replaced Franck Perera at Conquest last month after the team lost a major sponsor, but had an accident on the second day of practice at Indy and subsequently struggled to get up to speed.
He had aimed to make up for this with a solid finish in the race, so was disappointed to drop out before the halfway point.
"The front end was giving up all the way through the race and I couldn't follow cars in traffic," Camara explained.
"Eventually I hit the wall. I'm okay but it was a just a shame for the bidaroo crew because they worked really hard to get me back in it after my first crash at the beginning of the month. We were doing quite well as well so it is a shame."
Team boss Eric Bachelart said the crash was a real blow given the effort Conquest had already put in following Camara's practice accident, and with the next round at Milwaukee just one week away.
"Looking at the accident, it seems he went too high, got some understeer and hit the wall pretty hard," Bachelart said. "It's our second accident of the month and another major one, and we've got to be at Milwaukee in a couple of days."
Ganassi's Scott Dixon and Dan Wheldon continue to lead from Andretti Green duo Tony Kanaan and Marco Andretti.
