BMW appoint new chief designer

BMW Sauber have appointed Christoph Zimmermann as chief designer, the team said today

Zimmermann replaces Jorg Zander, who left BMW for Honda Racing earlier this year.

The German outfit has been looking for a chief designer, going as far as placing a wanted advertisement for the job in Autosport magazine in mid-July.

The team eventually decided to promote one of the Sauber senior engineers, and elected Zimmerman for the role. He will report to technical director Willy Rampf.

"On principle we fill executive positions internally whenever possible," BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen commented. "It also sends an important signal to our workforce.

"I am delighted that in Christoph Zimmermann we have a highly qualified colleague in our ranks who will take over the task of Chief Designer.

"From his previous work he is familiar with the complex technical relationships as well as the specific operational procedures involved. In keeping with our philosophy, we will also replace him internally."

Zimmermann joined Sauber in 1989 and has worked as a composite and model designer, before becoming head of composite design in 2000. He said: "The BMW Sauber F1 Team has made great strides in its two development years.

"I would like to make my own contribution in supporting the team on its successful path to the top."
