Farfus moves to Schnitzer BMW team

Augusto Farfus will race for top BMW outfit Schnitzer Motorsport in next year's World Touring Car Championship

The Brazilian has raced for Alfa Romeo until this year, where he led the championship heading into the final round at Macau.

Farfus will replace Dirk Muller, while 2006 WTCC runner-up Jorg Muller is retained by the team.

"It's an honour to when a company like BMW gives me the chance to compete for them," said Farfus.

"I'm confident that I'll be in a competitive car from the first race of the season, and my goal is to be world champion with BMW in 2007."

BMW have won the first two championships since the WTCC was reborn, and Farfus believes that he can start next season well in his home race.

"The 2007 season opener in Brazil will be in my home town of Curitiba," he said. "Andy Priaulx was able to win a race there last year, so I'm convinced that I can be successful from the word go."

BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen added: "Since making his debut in the ETCC in 2004 Augusto has learned a lot and displayed a steep upward trend.

"To be able to stand up to the extremely competitive field in this hard-fought championship demonstrates his extraordinary talent."

Theissen recently told Autosport magazine that the German Schnitzer team could change their philosophy on drivers for 2007.

In recent years they have run a German pairing, but they have yet to taste title success in the WTCC, and were unable to wrap up the spoils in its predecessor the ETCC.
