Indy 500 driver by driver

Indy 500 driver by driver

Marco Andretti

NYSE Group
Dallara

Started: 9
Finished: 2

A stunning debut. Having started ninth, the 19-year-old was already up to third by lap 34. Pulled off a spectacular save on lap 54, when he started to lose the car running in the dirty air of his teammate Tony Kanaan. Eventually worked his way into the lead by passing his father three laps from the finish, and appeared to have the race won until the final straight.

Michael Andretti

Jim Beam/Vonage
Dallara

Started: 13
Finished: 3

Ran alongside son Marco for the majority of the race and was leading with three laps to go. Made a good strategy decision by fuelling to the finish on the penultimate yellow flag, but ultimately didn't have the pace at the end to take his first Indy 500 victory.

Townsend Bell

Rock & Republic
Dallara

Started: 15
Finished: 22

Managed to drive out of the pits with his fuel hose still attached while trying to get back on the lead lap, which earned him a drive-though penalty. Collided in the pits with Hornish, who was serving the same punishment for the same crime at the same time. The resultant suspension damage put him out of the race.

Jeff Bucknum

Life Fitness
Dallara

Started: 22
Finished: 32

Out on only the second lap after a collision with Hemelgarn Racing teammate PJ Chesson.

Ed Carpenter

Vision Racing
Dallara

Started: 12
Finished: 11

Lost ground at the first pitstop by switching the ignition off. Drove a steady race to finish the best of the cars one lap down.

Helio Castroneves

Marlboro Team Penske
Dallara

Started: 2
Finished: 25

Went a lap down on lap 57 thanks to Dan Wheldon's blistering early pace. Got it back on the next yellow but lost it again making his third scheduled pitstop earlier than expected. Race ended on lap 110 in a Turn 4 collision with fellow former winner Buddy Rice.

Eddie Cheever Jr.

Cheever Racing
Dallara

Started: 19
Finished: 13

Not the Indy 500 return Cheever would have wanted, but kept out of trouble and finished two laps down in 13th.

PJ Chesson

Carmelo Hemelgarn Racing
Dallara

Started: 20
Finished: 33

Out on the second lap after a collision with Jeff Bucknum.

Airton Dare

OCTANE Motors/Sanitec/SSM
Panoz

Started: 29
Finished: 18

A brief collision towards the end of the race with Dario Franchitti was the only time Dare troubled the leaders. Finished seven laps down.

Scott Dixon

Target Chip Ganassi Racing
Dallara

Started: 4
Finished: 6

Was awarded a drive-through penalty for blocking Tony Kanaan with 25 laps to go, which effectively put an end to his chances of victory. Was fighting for the lead until then.

Larry Foyt

AJ Foyt Racing
Dallara

Started: 23
Finished: 30

Succumbed to handling problems before half distance.

Dario Franchitti

Klein Tools/Canadian Club
Dallara

Started: 17
Finished: 7

Worked his way up through the field from 17th and was running second with 10 laps to go. However, had to pit for fuel during the final yellow flag period and finished 7th.

Felipe Giaffone

ABC Supply Co./AJ Foyt Racing
Dallara

Started: 21
Finished: 21

His Turn 2 crash 10 laps from the end did more than send the Brazilian into retirement. It was crucial in deciding the outcome of the race, causing a yellow flag period which allowed eventual winner Hornish to stay in touch of the leaders.

Stephan Gregoire

Effen Vodka Team Leader Special
Panoz

Started: 30
Finished: 29

Was an early pitstop visitor to sort out his ill-handling Panoz. Didn't make it to a quarter distance.

Bryan Herta

XM Satellite Radio
Dallara

Started: 16
Finished: 20

Lost nine laps before even a quarter of the race had been run after his Andretti Green mechanics had to take his engine cover off to work on his Honda engine. Finished 12 laps down, still running.

Sam Hornish Jr.

Marlboro Team Penske
Dallara

Started: 1
Finished: 1

Hornish Jr was the favourite, but he wasn't expected to win it this way. Left his pitbox with the fuel hose still attached after his penultimate stop, dropping him from the lead to seventh. Refuelled to the finish afterwards and after serving a drive-through penalty for the fuel hose misdemeanour, he got lucky with the late yellow that allowed him to stay out while most were pitting at the end. Seemingly came back from the dead to take his first Indy 500 victory.

PJ Jones

CURB Records Special
Panoz

Started: 32
Finished: 19

An unimpressive race for a son of a former winner. Went a lap down early on and never caught up. Eventually finished 11 laps off the lead.

Tony Kanaan

Team 7-Eleven
Dallara

Started: 5
Finished: 5

Like Franchitti, Kanaan was in contention for victory until the end, when he had to pit when the leading runners didn't. Ultimately paid the price for a wrong strategy decision.

Jaques Lazier

Videopoker.com
Panoz

Started: 24
Finished: 17

Ran over some debris from Tomas Scheckter's crash which damaged his undertray, but Lazier was already two laps behind at that point. Eventually finished seven laps down.

Buddy Lazier

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing
Dallara

Started: 25
Finished: 12

The former winner finished a respectable 12th, a lap behind Hornish. Never threatened the leaders.

Arie Luyendyk Jr.

Luyendyk Racing
Panoz

Started: 31
Finished: 28

Didn't come close to repeating his father's famous victories on his Indy 500 debut. Retired with handling problems after 54 laps.

Kosuke Matsuura

Panasonic ARTA
Dallara

Started: 7
Finished: 15

Was playing catch-up from the beginning after taking his second pitstop early to try and cure understeer problems. Finished four laps behind Hornish.

Thiago Medeiros

PDM Racing
Panoz

Started: 33
Finished: 31

Having scraped into the field in the final day of qualifying, Medeiros was six laps down by lap 25 having pitted to try and sort out engine woes. His problems were compounded when he was awarded a drive-through for pitlane speeding. More pit work couldn't get his car working again, and he became an early retirement.

Vitor Meira

Panther
Dallara

Started: 6
Finished: 10

Having finished a superb second last year, Meira got back on the lead lap and was happy with his 10th place, the last of the lead lap cars.

Max Papis

Cheever Racing
Dallara

Started: 18
Finished: 14

Ran over a piece of debris from Al Unser Jr's accident, ripping a hole in his undertray. Still finished 14th, three laps down.

Danica Patrick

Rahal Letterman Racing Team Argent
Panoz

Started: 10
Finished: 8

Not quite the headline-grabbing race that Patrick had last year, but still a respectable drive considering she was driving an uncompetitive Panoz. Kept out of trouble but wasn't a threat in the crucial closing laps.

Buddy Rice

Rahal Letterman Racing Team Argent
Panoz

Started: 14
Finished: 26

Racing in his first Indy 500 since he won it two years ago, however he crashed out on lap 110 after colliding with Helio Castroneves in Turn 4.

Tomas Scheckter

Vision Racing
Dallara

Started: 11
Finished: 27

Race ended on lap 66 when he put his left-front tyre too far inside the rumble strip inside Turn 4, spinning into the outside wall. Thankfully missed everybody while spinning back across the track and into the pitlane entry.

Scott Sharp

Delphi
Dallara

Started: 8
Finished: 9

Complained that his car didn't handle well enough in traffic, and he only managed to get back on the lead lap following the final yellow flag.

Jeff Simmons

Rahal Letterman Racing Team Ethanol
Panoz

Started: 26
Finished: 23

Crashed out under yellow flag conditions on lap 155 on cold tyres. Hit the Turn 3 wall before ending up in the fence at Turn 4.

Al Unser Jr.

A1 Team USA Geico Dreyer & Reinbold
Dallara

Started: 27
Finished: 24

Had a steady run on his return to the Indy 500 until lap 145, when he lost control of the car in Turn 3 and hit the outside wall.

Dan Wheldon

Target Chip Ganassi Racing
Dallara

Started: 3
Finished: 4

Was dominant for most of the race, leading 148 of 200 laps as he tried to become the first driver to win back-to-back Indy 500s with different teams. Was always a threat, but ultimately paid the price for having to pit because of a puncture 16 laps from home.

Roger Yasukawa

Playa Del Racing
Panoz

Started: 28
Finished: 16

Struggled with an oversteering car throughout to finish six laps behind.
