British Comp. Driver: Dan Wheldon

Dan Wheldon won the British Competition Driver of the Year at the Autosport Awards 2005

Autosport Awards

The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.

This season Wheldon became the first driver since Jacques Villeneuve 10 years ago to win both the IndyCar title and the Indy 500 in the same year.

He was the first British driver to win at the Brickyard since Graham Hill took the title in Graham 1966.

When asked which was his greatest achievement he replied: "It was a great year, but definitely drinking the milk was my best. I never liked Milk until the Month of May but now I drink it every morning!

"Every driver that comes to America wants to win the 500 and the championship kept the boss [Michael Andretti] happy. It was particularly special."

Wheldon talked of his recent decision to sign with Chip Ganassi Racing for next season rather than going to Formula One.

"It was a very difficult decision emotionally," Wheldon added, "becoming attached to so many people and having a lot of success together with a lot of people. But Chip Ganassi isn't used to not winning often. Scott Dixon and I are going to work hard to put him back in victory lane nest year.

"I certainly enjoy America a lot but I never say never to Formula One but you have to get the right opportunity."
