Piquets aim for GP2
The Piquet Sports team hopes to graduate to the new GP2 Formula 1 support series in 2005 and Nelson Piquet Jr could be joined in the team by none other than his father, 51-year old Nelson Piquet
Nelson Angelo Piquet, the 18-year-old son of the three-time F1 champion, has targeted the new series next year and hopes to make the move with the same team that is running him in the British Formula 3 Championship.
"I'm interested in this GP2 series, and it would be a great step to move up from F3," he told this week's Autosport magazine. "If we decide to do GP2 then we'd do it with our own team. And do you know you wants to be my team-mate? My dad! Because in GP2 all the teams must enter two cars and he wants to come back to racing. He wants to do single-seaters. I wouldn't be too unhappy about it."
Piquet Sports team manager Felipe Vargas says Piquet Sr has often expressed an interest in joining his son in the same team, but that business commitments in Brazil could prevent such a pairing. The move to GP2 though was a distinct possibility, he said.
"We will do whatever we think is best for him [Piquet Jr], maybe with another team, maybe ours," he said. "If we do run a team, obviously we will try to find the proper people - we wouldn't go there just with our existing personnel."
