Race: Castroneves' controversial win

Helio Castroneves has claimed victory in the Indianapolis 500 for the second year in a row after crossing the line under yellow flags - but Team Green has vowed to protest the result after great controversy on the penultimate lap

Castroneves' Penske Dallara-Chevrolet led from Paul Tracy as the race entered its final stages. The Brazilian had hit the front after rookie Tomas Scheckter, who led much of the race, crashed with 28 laps to go.
Penske took a gamble at this point and kept Castroneves out on track during the last round of pit stops, leaving him to run a mammoth 42 laps on a single tank of fuel.

Tracy had passed Felipe Giaffone and latched on to Castroneves' tail with just four laps to go. It looked unlikely that Castroneves would make it to the end as his fuel levels hit rock bottom, and sure enough, Tracy shot around him as the Brazilian began to slow.

But seconds earlier Laurent Redon and Buddy Lazier collided, meaning the race would end under caution. Tracy claimed he was leading before the yellow flags flew, but officials ruled Castroneves was in front when the crash took place, giving him a controversial win.

Tracy said: "I passed him round the outside of Turn 3 and as far as I could see the greens were still up. I believe I was past before the yellows so we are going to protest this thing."

Castroneves was able to nurse his car over the final lap to cross the line almost out of fuel. He becomes the first driver to win back-to-back Indy 500s since Al Unser Sr pulled off the feat in 1970 and '71.

"It's a dream," said the overwhelmed Brazilian. "To win two is just amazing and this second one is so much sweeter."

It also marked a 12th victory in the 500 for Penske.
