Podcast: Near-F1 pace for a fraction of the cost - Formula 5000

F5000 1969

Formula 5000 offered near-Formula 1 performance for a fraction of the cost during its glory years in the late 1960s and 1970s.

The latest episode of The Autosport Podcast explains what made these cars so special and why the category thrived then declined - also asking the question of what F1 today could learn from its success.

Simon Hadfield, Marcus Pye and Ben Anderson - who have all raced F5000 machinery - join Edd Straw to tell the story of the stock-block V8-powered single-seaters.

The driving style required to get the best out of them, and the reasons for the cars often being unreliable, are revealed during a wide-ranging discussion of F5000's global success.

There's also a look at the great drivers in the category, including Mario Andretti and Brian Redman, as well as a discussion about the best cars of the era.

The Autosport Podcast, released every Monday and Thursday, is available to subscribe to free via iTunes, Spotify and other podcast suppliers - simply search for 'Autosport'.
