Correa in intensive care "for some more time" after Spa F2 crash
Juan Manuel Correa will remain in intensive care following surgery for leg and back injuries sustained in a crash that claimed the life of fellow Formula 2 racer Anthoine Hubert
Sauber Junior Team driver Correa was unable to avoid Hubert's car after a multiple-car crash at Eau Rouge and Raidillon in the F2 feature race at Spa last weekend.
He was taken to the CHU Liege Hospital with what was described as several leg fractures and a minor spinal injury.
The Alfa Romeo Formula 1 junior will remain in intensive car for "some more time" following his surgery.
A statement issued on his behalf read: "Juan Manuel Correa continues in the intensive care unit of the CHU Liege hospital.
"The doctors have decided to keep him in the ICU for some more time to continue performing additional examinations and follow up as closely as possible.
"His state of health has not undergone changes and remains stable."
On Monday, a statement on Correa's Instagram page provided an update on his condition.
"After a lengthy surgery to repair fractures to both his legs, JM Correa has started his recovery process," it read.
"He will be in intensive care for at least 24 hours.
"His family is thankful to all the people who are sending caring messages.
"When his conditions will be more stable, JM will be transferred to USA to follow his recovery treatment for the next months.
"JM is overwhelmed of sadness and his prayers are for Antoine Hubert's Family."
On Tuesday evening, it was confirmed that Correa is now being transferred from Belgium to a specialist hospital unit in the United Kingdom in order to continue his recovery.
Correa is 12th in the F2 drivers' standings and has enjoyed an impressive rookie season. He took runner-up finishes in Baku and at Paul Ricard, where he finished behind Hubert, earlier this season.
An investigation into the crash has been launched by the FIA.
