Video: How F1's 2021 ground effect differs from fearsome predecessor

A commitment to reintroducing ground effect aerodynamics was an eye-catching standout in Formula's 2021 proposals and is evocative of the championship's late '70s and early '80s era.

Lotus pioneered ground effect and helped eliminate the downsides of overbody aerodynamic elements that created drag as well as downforce, but the concept was banned in the early '80s on safety grounds.

Ground effect is now seen as key to improving F1's racing in 2021, and in this video Chain Bear explains how the concept works and why the form in which it returns will be a different prospect to its previous era.
