HSCC targeting record-breaking Historic F2 Silverstone Classic grid
The Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) is targeting a record-breaking 40-car Historic Formula 2 grid at the Silverstone Classic in July after unprecedented support for the category
The HSCC has reported record levels of interest in its series and has filled over half the grid for the season-opening Hockenheim races over six weeks ahead of the event, with 22 entries from seven countries currently confirmed.
Close racing, affordable cars and attractive venues has helped an explosion in demand for Historic F2, which covers the 1600cc and 2-litre cars from 1967-78 as well as Formula Atlantic cars of the '70s.
Over the winter there has been clear signs that that Historic F2 is set to be the best-supported high-profile single-seater class this year.
In 2018 a total of 50 drivers took part and that number is set to grow further in '19.
The schedule for Historic F2 takes in six double-header race weekends at major European race tracks, topped by the date at the Silverstone Classic on July 26-28.
A host of F2 regulars will be joined by a number of newcomers for the new season.
Wolfgang Kaufmann brings experience from Le Mans and international GT racing with his newly-acquired ex-Stephen South March 782, while Martin Bullock is bringing a Chevron B34 to Historic F2.
Gerard Gamand will return after a gap of nearly a decade with his rare ex-Patrick Dal Bo Pygmee MDB17 from 1972.
One-time Historic Formula 1 champion Mike Wrigley will switch to the ex-Giacomo Agostini Chevron B42 and his son Matthew will step up to the March 782 previously raced by Dean Forward.
Races at Brands Hatch GP, Magny Cours, Zandvoort and Dijon will join Hockenheim and Silverstone GP on the Historic F2 schedule this season.
Andy Dee-Crowne of the HSCC said: "Historic Formula 2 is attracting unparalleled levels of interest ahead of 2019.
"We're delighted to welcome a host of new drivers, but we are also very, very pleased to be welcoming back many of the drivers who have loyally supported the championship since the HSCC took over the management of Historic F2 more than a decade ago."
