Interlagos to return to WEC calendar for 2019/20 season

WEC Interlagos 2014 start

The return of the World Endurance Championship to Interlagos has been confirmed for the 2019/20 season.

The move, which takes the WEC back to Brazil for the first time since 2014, was announced on Thursday in Sao Paulo without a firm date being given.

The WEC has agreed a multi-year deal with local promotions agency N.Duduch Motorsports to put on the six-hour event at the home of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Reigning WEC LMP2 champion Bruno Senna will act as an ambassador for the race.

A statement from the WEC indicated that the date for the race would be revealed on the release of the 2019/20 calendar in the summer.

WEC boss Gerard Neveu said: "Our return to South America has been something we've been working towards for several years now, and our thanks must go to Nicholas Duduch and his organisation for their hard work to make it happen, with the support of the city of Sao Paulo."

Duduch added: "We are honoured to be part of this huge project. In partnership with the FIA WEC, we want to offer a complete experience for motorsport fans."

The 2019/20 WEC will be the first run to a winter-series format, with the season kicking off in the late summer or early autumn and climaxing the following June with the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The Interlagos WEC round was held in September in 2012 and '13, before moving to November in its final season on the calendar.

The track also has a history of running major sportscar enduros at the beginning of the year.

Its long-running Mil Milhas fixture regularly took place in January for the first half of the 2000s.

The WEC fixture at Interlagos in 2012-14 was promoted by two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi.
