IndyCar's Newgarden and Castroneves enter ice rallycross events

Reigning IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden and triple Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves will make guest appearances in the Scandinavian RallyX on Ice series next month

The winter series will be held across four rounds in Norway and Sweden, and includes the Sweden's World Rallycross Championship venue Holjes as its second event.

Penske pair Newgarden and Castroneves will appear in the third and fourth rounds at Al and Gol respectively, driving the Supercar Lites machine used in World RX's RX2 support category.

"I'm really excited and anxious to participate in the RallyX on Ice series," said Newgarden.

"I've had the opportunity to drive a lot of different types of race car on a lot of different types of track all around the world, but I've never done anything quite like this.

"I've been able to see some videos and pictures and it looks like a lot of fun, but also quite challenging.

"It will help to bring out our pure driving skills, for sure.

"I look forward to the challenge and hope I can represent Team Penske and IndyCar well."

Castroneves said he had "jumped at" the chance to try ice rallycross.

"I've never raced a rallycross car like this and I've never raced on ice, so it will be a learning experience for me," he added.

"It blows me away to think about racing a car with spikes in the tyres.

"I'm looking forward to just taking it all in and going out there and doing the best I can.

"I can honestly say this will help me to complete my motorsport resume one day."

The ice series has announced a 23-driver entry list including World RX event winners Robin Larsson and Kevin Eriksson, and RX2 champion Cyril Raymond, who is targeting a World RX Supercar drive in 2018.

NASCAR Trucks frontrunner and Global Rallycross driver Austin Cindric will also take part, following his Supercar debut in the GRC last season, alongside fellow GRC Supercar racer Oliver Eriksson.
