European F3 of 2018: Pau GP to start season, Misano joins calendar

The Formula 3 European Championship will kick off later than ever next season, with the prestige mid-May Pau Grand Prix slot

With the Silverstone World Endurance Championship round - which F3 traditionally supports - moving to August in the new WEC super-season, and the nomadic Italian date not this time aligning with the World Touring Car Championship at Monza, there will be no races in April.

As in 2017, Euro F3 will not support the traditional Hockenheim DTM curtain-raiser, making one visit to the Baden-Wurttemberg circuit for the October finale.

Pau therefore kicks off a 10-event F3 schedule that is squeezed into just five months, and in which the number of DTM support slots has risen from six to seven.

This is owing to the DTM's addition of a round at the Italian circuit of Misano in late August, one week after the Silverstone WEC support fixture.

Although Misano is better known as a MotoGP circuit, it has hosted rounds of major European single-seater championships before - Formula 2 raced there from 1977-84, and the previous European F3 Championship competed at Misano three times in the early '80s.

Apart from Pau and Silverstone, the other non-DTM support slot is at the Spa 24 Hours in late July.

F3 European Championship 2018 calendar

May 12-13 Pau
June 2-3 Hungaroring
June 23-24 Norisring
July 14-15 Zandvoort
July 27-28 Spa
August 18-19 Silverstone
August 25-26 Misano
September 8-9 Nurburgring
September 22-23 Red Bull Ring
October 13-14 Hockenheim
