Silverstone BTCC: Goff beats Ingram to pole by 0.001 seconds

Jack Goff claimed his second British Touring Car Championship pole of the season after edging out Tom Ingram in a breathless qualifying session at Silverstone

Goff's Honda Civic Type R was a regular fixture at the top of the timesheet in a frenetic session, although his margin for pole ended up being a mere thousandth of a second over the Speedworks Motorsport Toyota Avensis of Ingram.

Goff rocketed to the top of the times early on with a best of 58.848s, and further improved on that time thereafter as the pack behind continued to shuffle amongst one another.

But inside the final five minutes of the session Goff had that fastest time removed, with his previous second best lap - a 58.653s - leaving him 0.001 seconds clear of Ingram.

Ingram had jumped up to second with a late effort, but had nothing else to offer and finished the session in that position - with Goff left to celebrate a second career BTCC pole, and his second from the last four rounds.

Adam Morgan was a strong third in his Ciceley Racing Mercedes A-Class ahead of the leading Team Dynamics Honda Civic Type R of Matt Neal.

Team Hard's Jake Hill and the Handy Motorsport Toyota Avensis of Rob Austin will share the third row of the grid for race one, while Ant Whorton-Eales secured the best qualifying result of his debut BTCC campaign with seventh in his AmD Tuning Audi S3.

Colin Turkington will start Sunday's first race from eighth, with Goff's Eurotech team-mate Brett Smith separating the WSR BMW 125i M Sport driver from chief title rival Ash Sutton on the grid.

Sutton's Team BMR team-mate Jason Plato finished the session 11th, but was shown a black flag for multiple track limits offences and sat out the final five minutes.

He will share the sixth row of the grid for Sunday's opener with the second Team Dynamics Honda of Gordon Shedden.

Championship returnee Rob Huff was 28th in his first BTCC qualifying session since 2004 in his Power Maxed Racing Vauxhall Astra.

Less than a second covered the entire field around the 1.64-mile National Circuit, with 32nd place qualifier Stephen Jelley 0.886s off Goff's best.
