GP3 Silverstone: Mercedes F1 junior George Russell takes pole

Mercedes Formula 1 junior driver George Russell topped GP3 qualifying at Silverstone ahead of his ART Grand Prix team-mate Anthoine Hubert

The 2015 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner, who claimed his first pole and victory at the Red Bull Ring last weekend, set a best lap of 1m46.608s.

Championship leader and Honda F1 junior Nirei Fukuzumi completed the top three for ART.

Russell was quickest after the first half of the 30-minute session had been completed and although his rivals improved their best times he was able to go quicker still to secure the top spot with an advantage of 0.106s over Hubert.

Dorian Boccolacci qualified fourth ahead of Alessio Lorandi, but will lose three places for tomorrow's feature race after crashing over the rear of Lorandi at the end of race two in Austria.

Renault F1 academy member Jack Aitken ended up sixth in front of his home crowd in the final ART machine.

Niko Kari was seventh for Arden International ahead of Arjun Maini and Ryan Tveter.

Julien Falchero rounded out the top 10 for Campos Racing.

Ferrari F1 junior Giuliano Alesi qualified 12th for the Trident squad, while Bruno Baptista, who is racing despite hurting his back in an airborne accident at the last round in Austria, will start 18th for DAMS, just in front of his team-mate Tatiana Calderon.
