Sir Chris Hoy unveiled as celebrity driver for LMP3 Cup finale

Olympic gold medalist Sir Chris Hoy will race in LMP3 for the first time since landing the inaugural European championship in 2015 with an LMP3 Cup guest appearance in September

Six-time Olympic cycling champion and 11-time world champion Hoy has been unveiled as the celebrity entrant in the guest United Autosports-run Ligier JSP3 for the British LMP3 series' season finale at Donington Park on September 16/17.

Hoy will share the car with the winner of the LMP3 Cup's Young Driver initiative.

Ten drivers are on the shortlist for that role: BRDC British Formula 3 drivers Enaam Ahmed, Toby Sowery and Callan O'Keeffe, EuroFormula Open leader Harrison Scott, and sportscar racers Scott Malvern, Alex Sedgwick, Sandy Mitchell, Stephane Kox and Dan O'Brien.

The winner will be decided by public votes in an online poll.

Hoy has extensive prototype racing experience, having won the inaugural European Le Mans Series LMP3 title alongside Charlie Robertson in a Ginetta in 2015, before contesting last year's Le Mans 24 Hours in the LMP2 category.

Since then he has made a handful of appearances in UK club racing.

"I'm really excited to be racing for United Autosports in the final round of the LMP3 Cup Championship at Donington Park," said Hoy.

"To be sharing the drive with an aspiring young champion of the future will make it even more special, I'm sure."

United Autosports team owner and managing director Richard Dean added: "Chris is the perfect candidate as he's a very handy driver and a truly inspirational sportsman.

"You don't win a European title by not being committed or not having talent, plus Chris is Bronze-graded so he'll fit well with the winner, who will likely be Silver.

"We have a lot of testing planned for Chris and the prize drive winner."
