IndyCar Indianapolis GP: Power beats Dixon in practice one

Penske IndyCar driver Will Power set the pace in the first practice session on the Indianapolis road course, edging Ganassi's Scott Dixon by less than a tenth of a second

Power turned a 1m09.3172s as the chequered flag fell to dislodge Dixon from top spot.

He finished the session 0.092 seconds ahead, with Josef Newgarden making it two Penskes in the top three, 0.111s off.

Cool conditions appeared to be troublesome for many of the drivers, namely the hard braking zone into Turns 1 and 12.

Many ran wide onto other Indianapolis layouts or grass during the session, but without any serious incidents, and conditions are forecast to improve as the two-day race weekend progresses.

Two-time Indianapolis road course winner Simon Pagenaud was fourth fastest, ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing's Spencer Pigot and Graham Rahal was sixth.

Juan Pablo Montoya ended the first session of his two-race deal with Penske in seventh place, with Helio Castroneves only 12th, more than half-a-second off the pace.

Ganassi's Max Chilton was eighth, ahead of AJ Foyt's Carlos Munoz, and 2016 Indianapolis 500 polesitter James Hinchcliffe.

Andretti Autosport had a tricky session, Alexander Rossi the best of its four drivers in 11th.

The top 20 was covered by less than a second in a session that had just one stoppage, for debris, right at the beginning of the 45 minutes.
