Long Beach IndyCar: Scott Dixon, Ganassi back on top in practice
Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon put himself back on top of the IndyCar timesheets at the end of the final practice session in Long Beach
The New Zealander set a time of 1m07.1348s, his fastest of the weekend so far, to lead the way despite overnight showers in the area.
Dixon led Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay by just 0.002 seconds as he went fastest for the fourth time in the last five practice sessions.
Last year's race winner Simon Pagenaud finished third for Penske ahead of Schmidt Peterson's James Hinchcliffe, who led the session in the final 10 minutes but then hit trouble.
The Canadian slowed on track before stopping his Dallara-Honda in the Turn 6 run-off area in the final five minutes with an apparent gearbox issue.
Takuma Sato was fifth fastest above Graham Rahal, Will Power and Josef Newgarden.
Points leader Sebastien Bourdais was ninth, but disrupted the session with an early red flag.
The Frenchman stalled his Dale Coyne Racing Dallara-Honda at the fountain complex between Turns 2 and 3 after damaging the left-hand side of the front wing assembly.
The session was halted for around two minutes, with Bourdais managing to protect the fragile front wing elements and return to the pitlane.
Ganassi's Tony Kanaan also ran into issues, only dragging his name up to 15th in the order late on after spending all but six minutes of the 45-minute session in the pitlane with an electrical problem.
