Long Beach IndyCar: Dixon sets practice pace for Ganassi
Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon went fastest in first practice for the second round of the 2017 IndyCar season in Long Beach
The New Zealander set a time of 1m07.6357s ahead of Team Penske's Helio Castroneves and Dale Coyne Racing's points leader Sebastien Bourdais to lead the way for a third straight practice session in the 2017 season.
Schmidt Peterson Racing driver James Hinchcliffe was fourth fastest despite going off track at Turn 8 and requiring a U-turn to rejoin late in the session, with Will Power fifth and Alexander Rossi sixth and fastest of the Andretti contingent.
His team-mate Ryan Hunter-Reay finished seventh above Tony Kanaan and reigning champion Simon Pagenaud.
Mikhail Aleshin completed the top 10 but also explored the outskirts of the track at Turn 1, going straight on at the corner with a right-front lock-up.
Carlos Munoz, who ended up 13th, was the first driver to make an error on track, spinning and successfully getting away with no damage to his rear wing at Turn 6 after the right-hand side brushed the wall.
Ganassi's Max Chilton was shown the black flag by stewards after being unable to get up to speed earlier in the session due to a suspected electrical issue.
The Briton later returned to track after a period in the pitlane, but completed the slowest lap of any driver, 2.0859s behind Dixon's time.
