Pierre Kaffer to return to GTE Pro runner-up squad Risi fo Le Mans

Sportscar stalwart Pierre Kaffer will partner 2016 GTE Pro class runners-up Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander in the Risi Competizione Ferrari at this year's Le Mans 24 Hours

The German is making a return to the US team in the French enduro on June 17-18 to drive the Ferrari 488 GTE in which Fisichella, Vilander and Matteo Malcuelli took the fight to the Ganassi Ford GTs last season.

Kaffer last drove for Risi during a full campaign in the US IMSA SportsCar Championship in 2015 alongside Fisichella and took GT2 class honours with the team at Le Mans in 2009.

Team boss Giuseppe Risi said: "Pierre is an excellent match because he has a first-rate history with the team, knows how to work with the engineers and crew, knows the other drivers and has had success driving for us in Ferraris.

"He should be able to step right in to the role without any issues."

Kaffer, who remains part of Audi's GT roster, described his return to Risi at Le Mans as "an honour".

"We won together in 2009 at Le Mans with Jamie [Melo] and Mika [Salo] in a Ferrari 430 GT, and we had success in 2014 and 2015, so I am very comfortable with the team," he said.

Kaffer is scheduled to be making his 11th start at Le Mans this year and his first in a GT car since 2014 after two seasons racing for the privateer LMP1 ByKolles squad.
