Autosport Awards: Mercedes F1's Rosberg and Hamilton among nominees

Mercedes' Formula 1 title protagonists Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton headline a group of top motorsport competitors up for accolades in the 2016 Autosport Awards on Sunday evening

Autosport Awards

The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.

The prestigious, end-of-season gala will again be held in London, and broadcast live from 22:00 UK time.

Rosberg and Hamilton did battle during the 2016 F1 season, winning 19 of the 21 races between them, with Rosberg sealing his maiden world championship in Abu Dhabi last Sunday.

Just 48 hours after announcing his retirement, Rosberg is up for the International Racing Driver of the Year award, against Hamilton, Red Bull pair Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, IndyCar champion Simon Pagenaud and Formula E champion and World Endurance Championship frontrunner Sebastien Buemi.

Hamilton is also nominated for the British Competition Driver of the Year award, against outgoing McLaren driver Jenson Button, World Rally Championship event winner Kris Meeke and WEC stars Oliver Jarvis, Sam Bird and James Calado.

Mercedes' all-conquering F1 W07 Hybrid will face stern competition in the Racing Car of the Year category from the Red Bull-Renault RB12, Renault's Z.E.15 that dominated the first season of open powertrains in Formula E, Porsche's WEC and Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid, Audi's R18 e-tron quattro and Ford's new-for-2016 GT.

Manor pair Pascal Wehrlein and Esteban Ocon, and Renault's Jolyon Palmer are all up for Rookie of the Year honours, with GP2 runner-up Antonio Giovinazzi, GP3 champion Charles Leclerc and Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi.

The event will conclude with the announcement of the 2016 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner.

BRDC Formula 3 frontrunners Ricky Collard and Toby Sowery, British F4 runner-up Sennan Fielding and Formula Renault Eurocup champion Lando Norris are the 2016 nominees.

The winner will receive a prize test in a McLaren F1 car, a paid McLaren simulator role for 2017, full British Racing Drivers' Club membership and an Arai GP-6 RC carbon crash helmet.

The Award has been won by the likes of Button, David Coulthard, Dario Franchitti, Paul di Resta, Jarvis and Gary Paffett since 1989.

Other highlights include naming new recipients of Gregor Grant, John Bolster and Pioneering and Innovation Awards, and crowning the second Autosport Williams Engineer of the Future Award winner.

International Rally Driver and Rally Car of the Year accolades will also be handed out, along with the maiden Rider of the Year prize - open to riders competing on the MotoGP bill - and National Driver and British Club Driver of the Year honours.
