Jake Dennis makes surprise F3 return in Silverstone testing

GP3 ace Jake Dennis has made a surprise return to the cockpit of a Formula 3 European Championship car as teams test this week at Silverstone in preparation for 2017

The 21-year-old Briton, who was fourth in the GP3 standings this season, has been testing with Carlin during Thursday's running.

Dennis has joined Formula Renault Eurocup champion Lando Norris, FR NEC race winner Jehan Daruvala and Euroformula Open runner-up Ferdinand Habsburg, all of whom are strongly tipped to race with Carlin's squad of Dallara-Volkswagens in 2017.

The plans of Dennis for next season are unclear, but he would be expected to be taking part in the GP2 and GP3 tests in Abu Dhabi this week if there was a strong chance of remaining on the Formula 1 support package.

He completed his rookie F3 campaign with Carlin in 2014, before moving to Prema Powerteam in '15 and finishing third in the championship.

Prema has also taken the opportunity to test at Silverstone, with German and Italian Formula 4 runner-up Mick Schumacher at the wheel on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The German was joined by Ferrari junior Guan Yu Zhou, who like Schumacher is expected to race for the Italian team next season.

Van Amersfoort Racing has also taken to the track on Thursday, with its 2016 drivers Harrison Newey and Pedro Piquet joined by David Beckmann (an F3 podium finisher with Mucke Motorsport this season), German F4 champion Joey Mawson and fellow F4 graduate Kami Laliberte.

Hitech GP was out from Monday to Wednesday, with GP3 race winner Jake Hughes, Ralf Aron and Harrison Scott driving.
