Dale Coyne Racing gives Indy Lights graduate Enerson IndyCar debut

Indy Lights race winner RC Enerson will make his IndyCar debut with Dale Coyne Racing at Mid-Ohio this weekend after testing for the team last week

Enerson is the third driver to appear in Coyne's second car alongside full-season runner Conor Daly, following Luca Filippi and Gabby Chaves.

Nineteen-year-old American Enerson has won at Mid-Ohio in both USF2000 and Lights.

"I didn't think we'd be able to get a ride in 2016 and to be able to do an IndyCar race before trying to go for a full season next year," said Enerson, who raced for Sam Schmidt Motorsports in the first half of the 2016 Lights season.

"So it's amazing to be able to get that experience now.

"On top of that, Mid-Ohio is probably the best track for me to move up at because it's one of my favourites.

"I don't know what it is about the Mid-Ohio track but my driving style fits really well. Every time I've raced there, we were always up front.

"I think the test went really well. The biggest thing I need to work on is practicing hitting my marks in the pitstops."

Enerson was fourth in Lights as a rookie last year, having moved up after finishing second in USF2000 in 2014.

He said his IndyCar debut would be a chance to race against lifelong heroes.

"The biggest thing I am most looking forward to is running with some of the guys that I grew up watching," Enerson said.

"You look at all these guys that have been in it for so long like Helio [Castroneves] and Tony Kanaan, it's like 'wow, you're going to be racing with those guys'.

"It's going to be a big step up."
