Rockingham BTCC: Colin Turkington doubles up in race two
British Touring Car Championship leader Colin Turkington cruised to his eighth win of the season as he doubled up at Rockingham in devastating fashion
The race one winner led from lights-to-flag in the second race of the day, while behind Jason Plato held off a late flourish from MG team-mate Sam Tordoff to move into second in the points, equal with Gordon Shedden but 51 behind Turkington.
The dominating WSR driver shot into a clear lead from pole and was metronomic as he streaked clear of Plato, who jumped Tordoff on the opening lap.
The MG6s were split on the first tour by Alain Menu's BMR Volkswagen CC, but the prospect of the Swiss star picking up where he left off in the opener quickly vanished as Tordoff regained the place at the Tarzan hairpin second time round.
Behind the lead quartet, the opening lap was chaotic. Shedden went onto the grass on the run from Gracelands to Tarzan, dropping to 12th, while at the hairpin moments later Fabrizio Giovanardi muscled his way past Andrew Jordan as the 2013 champion was tagged by Adam Morgan.
Giovanardi almost followed Tordoff past Menu on lap two but was rebuffed, and as Menu defended at Deene, Giovanardi came under increasing pressure from Motorbase team-mate Mat Jackson, the Ford Focus duo making slight contact at Yentwood.
They swapped places soon after and Giovanardi then succumbed to a recovering Jordan, whose Eurotech Honda Civic had dropped back to 10th on the opening lap but was making swift progress as the only frontrunner on the softer tyre.
Shedden had made his way back into the top 10 and moved his Dynamics-run factory Civic into ninth when Morgan's Mercedes A-Class pulled onto the side of the track and retired.
The hatchback Civic in the hands of Jordan made it past the second Focus of Jackson at Tarzan at mid-distance to take fifth, and two laps later dived up the inside of Menu to snatch fourth at Gracelands.
Jordan soon had the two MGs in his sights, and as he slashed the gap to Tordoff so too Tordoff closed right in on Plato. The three ran almost nose-to-tail on the final lap, but Plato just held on as Tordoff denied Jordan a first podium since his race-three win at Croft in June.
Behind the top four, Rob Austin completed a fine charge from 12th on the grid by passing Menu for fifth on the final lap.
Jackson crossed the line seventh, while Shedden finished eighth again after passing Giovanardi late on.
