Red Bull Ring GP3: Emil Bernstorff scores first series victory

Emil Bernstorff won the second GP3 race at the Red Bull Ring, charging through from seventh on the grid and avoiding the crashing leaders to take his first series victory

Bernstorff's Carlin team-mate Luis Sa Silva led from pole, but had Status's Nick Yelloly attacking him right from the start. Yelloly grasped the lead at Turn 1 on lap two, but Sa Silva repassed him at Turn 2.

This led to a bottleneck of cars behind, and third-placed Matheo Tuscher was able to leapfrog Yelloly for second on the exit of Turn 2 and attacked Sa Silva into Turn 3.

Sa Silva failed to leave him a car's width on the inside, however, and once on the grass Tuscher was out of control and flew over Sa Silva's rear wheel and into the gravel, taking the erstwhile leader with him.

Unhindered by this, Bernstorff inherited the lead and cruised to a 7.7s victory.

Richie Stanaway lost second place to Jimmy Eriksson with a handful of laps remaining, as Eriksson outbraked him into Turn 2.

The rear-tyre-troubled Stanaway fended off Roman de Beer to the finish for third, de Beer having passed Yelloly for third at Turn 3 with three laps remaining.

Patric Niederhauser finished sixth after Jann Mardenborough spun out of that position at Turn 6 on lap seven. Dino Zamparelli completed the point scorers, while fellow Briton Dean Stoneman charged from 23rd to 10th.

Yesterday's winner Alex Lynn finished 20th after being forced to pit for a new front wing on the opening lap.
