Red Bull Ring GP2: Leal sets the pace in free practice for Carlin

Julian Leal set the fastest time in a lively GP2 free practice session at the Red Bull Ring, with times tumbling throughout the 45-minute session as the track dried

It was the first ever running for GP2 cars at this venue.

There was rain in the air for the first part of the session, but as it relented and the track surface rubbered in, there was a rash of improvements as the session unwound.

Leal set his fastest lap, a 1m15.652s, with just two minutes remaining on the clock. His time was 0.116s clear of reigning European F3 champion Raffaele Marciello in his Racing Engineering machine.

Marciello's team-mate Stefano Coletti was third fastest, and Leal's team-mate Felipe Nasr was fourth, the Williams F1 reserve driver setting his time straight after a near miss with Facu Regalia at Turn 8, which the stewards will now investigate.

Trident's Johnny Cecotto Jr was fifth quickest, ahead of Mitch Evans, Daniel Abt and Rene Binder.

Bahrain winner Stoffel Vandoorne was ninth, ahead of points dominator Jolyon Palmer, who could only manage 10th.
