Indianapolis 500: EJ Viso fastest on day three
EJ Viso was fastest on a severely-curtailed third day of practice for the Indianapolis 500, with drivers getting just an hour's worth of total green flag time before the session was ended by thunderstorms
Viso, who is standing in for James Hinchcliffe while the Canadian continues to recover from a concussion sustained at last weekend's IndyCar race on the IMS road course, managed to squeeze in a total of 43 laps with a best average of 224.488mph.
Andretti stable-mate Kurt Busch, who is continuing preparations to become the fourth driver to complete the Indy 500/Charlotte 600 double on the same weekend, finished up second-quickest at 224.159mph ahead of Penske's Juan Pablo Montoya, who caused the final yellow before the session was ended when his car rolled to a stop at Turn 4.
Despite the rain, 31 drivers were able to squeeze in some running, with Sebastian Saavedra making his first appearance since his car was heavily damaged in a start-line accident on the road course on Saturday. The Colombian completed a seven-lap shakedown before the rain arrived.
Of the 33 confirmed entries, only Buddy Lazier and James Davison are still yet to make their first appearance in practice, although a handful of other drivers including Katherine Legge are continuing to scramble to put together 11th-hour deals.
