Rally Argentina: M-Sport's Elfyn Evans plans slower pace

M-Sport driver Elfyn Evans will reduce his pace on this week's Rally Argentina as he chases experience on his debut on the South American stages

Despite crashing early on last month's Rally of Portugal, the Welshman quickened his pace on the weekend stages around the Algarve - but admits he will not be going quite so hard this week.

"On the Saturday and Sunday in Portugal, we were pushing harder," said Evans.

"I'd been there before and I had a much better handle on the surroundings and I was pleased with the times we were setting. But now I have to reset things again.

"In many ways, that's quite something to get your head around.

"When you come off an event like Portugal, where we went well, the natural thing is to look to the next event and think about how you can build on that pace and try to go even quicker. That's not what Argentina is about for us."

Evans arrived in Villa Carlos Paz earlier this week, expecting some of the toughest stages of his career.

"I've had a look at the onboards and, from what I've seen, these will be some of the most technical stages in the season," he said.

"Certainly Sunday's roads - Giulio Cesare and El Condor - are incredibly narrow and difficult.

"Getting to the finish of this rally will be a result in itself. The big thing will be absolute precision in the driving.

"And that's very much my approach on round five. I need the experience for the years to come from this rally, which means quite a different way of working compared with the last round in Portugal."

Evans has finished two of his four starts as a factory World Rally Championship driver so far this year, with the highlight being his fourth place on Rally Mexico in March.
