Ex-F1 man Jerome D'Ambrosio gets Bentley Blancpain GT drive

Ex-Formula 1 driver Jerome D'Ambrosio is joining Bentley for its assault on the Blancpain Endurance Series in 2014

The Belgian, who contested 20 grands prix with Virgin and Lotus, is among the second raft of drivers announced for Bentley's two-car squad of Continental GT3s for the five-round series, which includes the Spa 24 Hours in July.

He joins Briton Duncan Tappy, who emerged as a frontrunner for one of the vacant drives last week, and BES regular Antoine Leclerc in the second of the two Continental GT3s.

D'Ambrosio only came into the picture over the past two weeks and was not among the 10-plus drivers who were evaluated by Bentley at a series of tests over the first three months of this year.

Bentley motorsport boss Brian Gush told AUTOSPORT: "Jerome is a great guy with great promise.

"He's already tested a GT car [a factory Ferrari GTE car for AF Corse] and proved fast, so we feel confident he will do a good job."

D'Ambrosio is due to get his first taste of the Bentley at its pre-season shakedown at Silverstone next week.

The new trio joins existing signings Guy Smith, Steven Kane and Andy Meyrick, who gave the Continental GT3 its race debut at the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi in December.
