Lewis Hamilton believes Kevin Magnussen will be mega quick in F1

Kevin Magnussen

Lewis Hamilton has no doubt that Kevin Magnussen can thrive from the outset when he follows in the Briton's footsteps as a McLaren rookie in the 2014 Formula 1 season.

Magnussen will be the first F1 novice to make his grand prix debut with McLaren since Hamilton in 2007, having been picked to replace Sergio Perez alongside Jenson Button next year.

Hamilton believes Formula Renault 3.5 champion Magnussen has both the pedigree and preparation to hold his own.

Analysis: is Magnussen ready for F1?

"He's not filling Jenson's boots, or my boots, so in that sense he has plenty of time to prepare, with plenty of time in the simulator," said Hamilton.

"He seems like a very intelligent young lad. He's always pleasant when I see him, and he's obviously very quick.

"He's done great in other categories. I think he is going to be mega quick."

Although Hamilton was able to test extensively before his F1 debut, he believes Magnussen can still be adequately prepared.

"I put energy into my training, I was prepared, and I'm sure Kevin will be doing exactly the same," said Hamilton.

"They'll give him the same opportunities to learn about the set-up, the car, the simulator.

"I'm sure he'll be on it every day so he'll hit the ground running.

"Without testing or practice on the tyres, it's a steep, steep learning curve.

"I'm sure he's had just as much running as all of us throughout the year - and more - in the simulator."

Hamilton's former team-mate Button admitted he was "surprised" McLaren had opted for Magnussen, but was confident the rookie would be ready.
