Volvo back in the WTCC for Shanghai round

Volvo will return to the World Touring Car Championship at Shanghai, with newly crowned Scandinavian Touring Car champion Thed Bjork making a one-off appearance with the Polestar squad

Bjork, who won nine of 12 races en route to this year's STCC crown, will race the Volvo C30 Polestar used for its last WTCC campaign in 2011, when it ran Robert Dahlgren.

Volvo said the outing was both a celebration of Bjork's success and an evaluation of future opportunities within the WTCC.

"We are entering this race to check the pulse of WTCC, as well as celebrating Thed Bjork's amazing performance in the STCC this year," Volvo's motorsport commercial director Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin said.

"We still think the WTCC represents possibly the best value for money and one-fits-all global motorsport solution if you want to race with a smaller C-segment car.

"Consequently, we are keen on staying closely informed and this is precisely our objective with Shanghai, not outright performance and results."

Bjork, 32, stressed that his main objective was simply to gain experience from his maiden appearance in the WTCC.

"I am looking forward to make my debut with Volvo and I am very grateful to get this opportunity," he said.

"The WTCC is a very competitive championship and the challenge for us is going to be great, but that is only fuelling my motivation.

"We keep our ambitions realistic - to make it to the top 10 would be a great result, but our main mission is to gather data and information.

"Nonetheless, I am going to give my very best and there is no doubt that we have two exciting races ahead of us."
