James Davison seeking more IndyCar outings after Mid-Ohio debut

James Davison is hoping that his solid IndyCar debut with Dale Coyne Racing at Mid-Ohio was enough to convince another team to give him an opportunity

The Australian, who had not raced a single-seater since Indy Lights in 2009, qualified 17th in Mid-Ohio, and looked comfortable throughout Sunday's race on his way to 15th place.

But with Coyne's second car seemingly spoken for over the remaining races, Davison said that his hopes of being able to build upon the experience if last weekend will depend upon finding something elsewhere.

"With Coyne this was a one-off, because [team-owner] Dale [Coyne] has done deals with other drivers for all the other races," Davison told AUTOSPORT.

"But with the Bryan Herta Autosport ride, and Panther rotating drivers ... I've done everything in my control, and I've just got to hope that I catch a break now, because I haven't been able to in the last four years since doing Indy Lights.

"I'm thankful to Dale and all of my supporters for the opportunity, and I hope I repaid the faith that they put in me."

Davison admitted that the race was a learning experience, and believes that he came away with plenty to build upon in the future

"Going into the race, I had no idea of anything - how long the tyres last, how hard you have to push to stay competitive, how hard you can push on cold tyres, how hard you can come into the pits ... everything was a learning experience," he said.

"So I know all that for the future, and know I can go a bit better next time. But I'm happy with the result.

"I don't think you can be satisfied unless you win, but all week I never once went off the track, I matched [James] Hinchcliffe and [Helio] Castroneves in qualifying, I raced some good guys, passed [Takuma] Sato.

"I think I did a consistent, mistake-free job that I hope can put me into a ride somewhere."

Coyne has not yet made an announcement regarding the driver of its second car for the next race at Sonoma in two weeks, however Stefan Wilson, Mike Conway and Pippa Mann are scheduled to race the #18 entry at Baltimore, Houston and Fontana respectively.
