Rubens Barrichello lands Grand-Am Indy ride, will test on Tuesday

Former grand prix driver Rubens Barrichello will get his first taste of a Daytona prototype on Tuesday ahead of his debut in one of the Grand-Am coupes at Indianapolis this weekend

Barrichello will test the Doran team's Dallara-Ford at Putnam Park near Indianapolis together with amateur driver Doug Peterson, his team-mate for this Friday's Grand-Am round in support of the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup round.

Team boss Kevin Doran said: "We wanted to get the guys together for some running before the meeting starts, because it is a pretty quick-fire weekend.

"I'm not expecting Rubens having too many problems getting used to the car.

"He's done some GT racing and is driving Brazilian Stock Cars, so he's used to low-downforce, low-grip cars."

Doran explained that the one-off deal for Barrichello, who raced in the IndyCar series in 2012, to contest the Indianapolis event had come about courtesy of Grand-Am.

"There's been a lot of work done by people at Grand-Am pushing this forward over a period of time," he said.

"There is a desire to see him running full-time in the series."

Doran stressed that there were no plans for Barrichello to continue with the team, which has no more scheduled appearances in Grand-Am this year.

Barrichello made his Grand-Am debut in this year's Daytona 24 Hours, sharing a GT class Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entered by the Brazilian Dener Motorsport team.
