Sergio Campana confirms participation in Auto GP Mugello races
Auto GP championship challenger Sergio Campana has confirmed his participation in this weekend's fifth round of the championship at Mugello
Campana's campaign had been thrown into doubt after a decision by Giuseppe Cipriani, his Ibiza Racing team's owner and team-mate, to curtail his season owing to a back complaint and business commitments.
Cipriani was absent from the preceding meeting at Silverstone in June, although Ibiza fielded two cars for Campana and Fabrizio Crestani.
"I will go to Mugello with my team," Campana told AUTOSPORT. "For this race I will probably have a new team-mate, but I am not sure what the situation is for the rest of the year as Giuseppe has decided to end his season."
Campana, who is 13 points behind series leader Kimiya Sato, is hopeful a strong result at his home race could assist in finding an alternative berth should Ibiza decide to miss the final three rounds.
"I am in a situation where, as I am fighting for the championship, it could be easier to find a seat with another team looking for a driver to help them achieve a good result."
Euronova and Sato conducted a private test at Vallelunga last week, alongside fellow Italian outfit MLR71, but Campana insists he does not feel under-prepared in comparison.
"I am sure Euronova are doing everything they can be to be competitive, but there is three hours of running in free practice at Mugello, so that should help everyone," he said.
"I have won there two or three times, and you can say it's my favourite circuit on the calendar. I really hope I can take some points off Sato.
"To do so we need to find a competitive set-up early in the meeting; at Silverstone we weren't really fast until race two, because of the engine problems that caused us to miss a free practice session, and we had a similar problem in Budapest."
Sato leads the Auto GP standings on 126 points. Campana is second on 113 points, 11 clear of Super Nova's in-form Vittorio Ghirelli.
