Silverstone GP3: Jack Harvey claims dominant first win at home
Reigning British Formula 3 champion Jack Harvey took his first GP3 Series race win in front of his home crowd at Silverstone on Saturday
ART racer Harvey did not let a lengthy safety car break his stride as he won by three seconds from poleman Kevin Korjus.
The safety car was required for a huge shunt at Becketts as Patrick Kujala flew over the back of David Fumanelli's crossed-up car. Both were uninjured, despite Kujala vaulting onto the top of the tyre wall at high speed.
Harvey led into the first corner, as team-mate Conor Daly rocketed from ninth to second after he blatantly jumped the start. Harvey had extended a 3.8s lead over Daly by the time the safety car appeared on lap five.
NEWS UPDATE: Sainz penalised and Kujala suspended
Daly took his drive-through penalty as the safety car came in, which meant Harvey had a big gap over Korjus at the restart. In truth, his lead never came under any serious threat throughout.
Behind Korjus, Facu Regalia held off the early challenge of Daniil Kvyat, while Tio Ellinas forced his way past Alex Fontana for fifth.
Nick Yelloly also passed Fontana, with a brilliant move at Stowe.
The battle for eighth, however self-destructed when Carlos Sainz Jr banged wheels with Lewis Williamson on the Wellington Straight, sending Williamson up into the air and into retirement. Sainz crawled home with damage in 13th.
This followed a superb pass by Williamson on Sainz at Maggots half a lap earlier. Sainz now faces a trip to the stewards.
