Detroit IndyCar: Mike Conway takes race two pole on series return

Mike Conway will start the second of this weekend's IndyCar races in Detroit from pole position after a superb performance in qualifying at Belle Isle on Saturday morning

The Brit, who is making a one-off appearance in the second Dale Coyne Racing entry, set the fastest overall time in the first test of the new double-header qualifying system, comfortably leading the second group with late 1m18.0977s.

His nearest rival from the group was Penske's Will Power, who finished up 0.06 seconds in arrears and will start from third.

James Jakes will complete an all-British front row after setting the fastest time from the first group.

The Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver's 1m18.1704s beat Ryan Hunter-Reay's lap by just 0.0590s. The reigning champion will start from fourth, with race one polesitter EJ Viso and Simon Pagenaud to complete the third row.

Several drivers from the first group were caught out when the session was stopped a couple of minutes early following a spin by Alex Tagliani.

The Canadian lost his two fastest laps for triggering a red flag, and will start from the rear of the field.
