Ken Block eyes European Rallycross

Ken Block is keen to race in the European Rallycross Championship in the future, but has admitted he does not have time to fit it into his busy schedule this year

The viral video star, World Rally Championship driver and Global Rallycross Championship ace is contesting the full GRC and Rally America, plus selected WRC events at present.

But works Ford driver Block said there are no sponsor partner issues barring him from running in the European championship and that he is eager to do so.

"I would love to do that," he told AUTOSPORT. "And they have really good tracks that have been around for a long time, I'd love to race on them.

"But I just haven't got the time. In future, there's potential to do one. I'd really like to drive on proper rallycross tracks."

Block has been critical of the track design of GRC events but defended the decision to cancel last Sunday's X Games Barcelona round due to bad weather and lack of suitable tyres.

On his Instagram page, Block wrote: "GRC runs a spec tyre for all of their events and it's the only tyre allowed. It's a grooved racing slick designed mostly for Tarmac.

"This means that on a soaked, slick, mud racing surface like the one here in Spain [it was a dirt surface on a flat stadium floor with no chance of drainage], it's just not going to perform for racing in that situation.

"The decision to cancel the race was smart because there wouldn't have been a competition, it would have been bumper-cars at 15mph, as none of us could possibly get any traction.

"Cars would have been wrecked for no good reason and the racing itself would have been horrible."

Barcelona was scheduled to be the first GRC round held in Europe, which now shifts to the next X Games event at Munich next month. Unlike Barcelona, that track has been designed to run outside the main Olympic stadium.
