AUTOSPORT Awards: Scott Malvern wins British Club Driver of the Year

Scott Malvern, AUTOSPORT Awards 2012Scott Malvern has been named British Club Driver of the Year at the AUTOSPORT Awards in London.

The 23-year-old Briton, who won the Formula Renault BARC title this year and the Formula Ford UK crown in 2011, beat competition from Ginetta Supercup champion Carl Breeze and Renault Clio Cup title-winner Jack Goff to win the award.

Malvern, who joins an illustrious list of former winners including David Coulthard, Dario Franchitti and Andy Priaulx, received his award from three-time Formula 1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart.

"At the start of the year I had nothing. Two days before the championship started I got a phone call, went to Snetterton and started," said Malvern. "To win a championship in a year you don't think you will race, and to do it on live TV, it's been an epic year. I'm so grateful."

After a long and distinguished karting career, Malvern made his car racing debut in 2009 in the National Formula Ford 1600 Championship, winning the title in his debut season. He also finished runner-up in the Formula Ford Kent Festival and claimed both the Sir Jackie Stewart Golden Helmet and Henry Rilett Memorial trophies.

Malvern graduated to the MSA Formula Ford championship the following season, claiming two wins, 14 podiums and two pole positions en route to finishing runner-up in the standings.

He stayed in the series in 2011 and produced unstinting success, storming to the title after winning 18 of the 24 races and finishing on the podium on another two occasions. He also achieved victories in select European races, and in total won 26 of the 33 events he contested.

The 2012 season brought a change of scenery as Malvern moved into the British-based Formula Renault BARC series. Three wins and 11 podiums helped carry him to the title despite a mid-season team switch.
