Winton V8 Supercars: Jamie Whincup takes narrow race two pole

V8 Supercars championship leader Jamie Whincup edged out Will Davison to take pole position for race two at Winton

Whincup had been the early pacesetter in his Triple 8 Holden, but it was Ford Performance Racing's Davison who was ahead going into the final two minutes.

Then Whincup came through with a 1m22.7970s lap to snatch the top spot away, and Davison's team-mate Mark Winterbottom recovered from a mistake on his previous lap to grab second.

Although Davison's response got him back in front of Winterbottom, pole belonged to Whincup by 0.0259 seconds.

Craig Lowndes put the second Triple 8 car fourth despite a scare when Shane van Gisbergen rejoined in his path after a trip off the road.

Van Gisbergen was held in the pits for a minute as a punishment, leaving him 11th on the grid, one place behind his Stone Brothers team-mate Lee Holdsworth, a podium finisher in race one.

Tekno driver Jonathon Webb came close to beating Lowndes to fourth, and just pushed Jason Bright's Brad Jones Holden out of a top-five spot.
