Hungary F2: Alex Fontana battles to maiden win
After dominating Friday practice, Alex Fontana converted his pace to a race victory in an incident-filled Formula 2 race in Hungary
Kevin Mirocha started the race alone on the front row of the grid, as Markus Pommer was forced to pit at the end of the formation lap with a mechanical problem.
This gave the poleman an easy run down to the first corner, ahead of Matheo Tuscher and Mihai Marinescu.
Hector Hurst caused a number of retirements, when an over-ambitious move at Turn 2 resulted in him collecting Axcil Jefferies and David Zhu.
The main drama of the race came on lap three. Marinescu had utilised the double boost zone to close in on Tuscher for second place on the run down into Turn 1.
Instead of moving out to attempt a pass, though, Marinescu instead tucked right in behind Tuscher, and subsequently collected the young Swiss driver, sending them both out of the race.
This promoted Fontana to second, and despite having to avoid the pirouetting cars in front of him, he still managed to catch Mirocha for the lead by the start of lap four.
Fontana got alongside into Turn 1, on the outside, but forcefully made the move stick under braking. From there, he romped clear to take his maiden F2 victory.
Luciano Bacheta spent the whole race fending off Daniel McKenzie for third position, but just held on to move a step closer to taking the F2 title that he could seal on Sunday.
