Last-gasp Luciano Bacheta grabs Brands Hatch Formula 2 pole

Luciano Bacheta will start Saturday's Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch from pole position after snatching the top spot in the final seconds of the session

On a wet track that never quite dried out enough for slicks, Bacheta played the conditions to perfection to deny Russian Max Snegirev a shock pole position by over half a second.

Points leader Bacheta had been among the pacesetters from the off, but with the track drying throughout, pole was always going to be decided in the dying moments. It changed hands three times in under a minute, with first Kevin Mirocha, then Snegirev and finally Bacheta going fastest.

Only one driver made a successful switch to slicks, with Brit Dino Zamperelli securing fourth spot - his best result of the season - on the grid for Saturday afternoon's race with a solid late effort.

There were problems for the free practice pacesetter Markus Pommer. The German will start 16th and last after technical problems forced him to miss the second half of the 30-minute session. Christopher Zanella, second in the championship, starts eighth.
